Joanne McCall Polishes NSA Fast Track
By Mitch Priestley
Joanne McCall, famously known as the Media Polisher, released her media wisdom and insights at the May 2 NSA Fast Track session. “Joanne is a media insider who operates on a first name basis with hundreds of top-tier producers, editors, and writers at such outlets as USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The View, Oprah, Today, The Huffington Post, AOL, Yahoo and others,” NSA member Jan Carothers noted as she introduced Joanne.
“No longer is it a question of ‘old media’ and ‘new media,’” Joanne emphasizes, “but ‘other media’ and ‘you media.’ That is, media that others control and media that you control.” Joanne says that video is king and audio is queen, and your “you media” should include them. YouTube is the #1 search engine for those under 30, she notes. Her thoughts regarding your videos:
• An external microphone is a necessity
• White screen makes a good background – avoid clutter!
• Light on you is important (full-spectrum)
On social media, Joanne has several tips:
• Get over your own resistance and engage in social media – it’s not going away
• Update frequently and be interactive
• Create a professional page on Facebook, a so-called fan-page
Regarding your website:
• Have a “Press Room” link on your home page where the press can find what they need
• Generate “link love” by adding value to online conversations and providing your link
• Write articles, including for e-zines,and include a link to your site
• Provide a downloadable one-sheet for each topic on which you speak
Have in your Press Room:
• Press releases
• Digital photos, in both high and low resolution
• Interview questions and topics
• Other goodies, such as a quiz, “Myths & Truths,” and/or video clips
In summary, Joanne suggests that professional speakers enhance their online presence and build a following as a “thought leader” in their fields.
Joanne will conduct her seminar, The Media Polisher Workshop, on June 11. Tuition is $997, discounted to $497 for NSA members. Workshop is limited to 4-6 people. More at www.mediapolisher.com.
